Library’s Big Read

It’s finally here. If you love books and like to share your thoughts about what you are reading, a Big Read is the perfect virtual event for you!

Note: This event has already passed.

Big Reads provide an experience similar to a book club, encouraging readers to share ideas and insight on the same title.

In our Belvoir Big Read, there’s no one meeting. Instead, our Library team will foster discussions throughout the Belvoir virtual community, at home and online.

The MWR Library has selected Louis Sachar’s “Holes” as its first Big Read.  The title has over 30 awards including a Newberry Medal of distinguished contributions to American literature for children.  The title is fun and has a wide appeal among readers of all ages and abilities.

Holes image.jpgBook Summary: Stanley Yelnats’s family has a history of bad luck, so he isn’t surprise when a miscarriage of justice sends him to boys’ juvenile detention center, Camp Green Lake.  There is no lake, and it’s hardly a camp: as punishment, the boys must each dig a hole a day.  The warden claims that this pointless labor builds character, but that’s a lie. Stanley must try to dig up the truth.

In this wonderfully inventive, compelling novel that is both serious and funny, Louis Sachar weaves a narrative puzzle that tangles and untangles, until it becomes clear that the hand of fate has been at work in the lives of the characters for generations.  It’s a darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment – and redemption.

The MWR Library will offer additional copies of the title for circulation during this six week community program, provide venues for online discussion and suggest enrichment activities to keep the conversation alive. Stay tuned to our MWR Facebook page and the Belvoir Big Read group page, and join us!
